Wellington Kink Community Guide

Common questions answered by local kinksters.

Wellington’s kink scene is relatively small and close-knit. A lot of activity happens through private parties, small venues, and established social circles rather than large public events. This can make the scene feel insulated and harder to get into, but there are still lots of options for newcomers.

Munches, rope socials and other low-key community events are generally easier to access. Private play parties and more intimate events may involve vetting or require you to know someone in the local community first.

Auckland’s BDSM scene is bigger, more visible, and generally easier to access, with more public events, clubs, and organized groups. Wellington’s scene is smaller and more private, although there are still plenty of social events that are open to newcomers.

Wellington has a handful of venues that are welcoming to kink, swinging, and LGBTQ+ communities, although many are general nightlife or community spaces rather than dedicated BDSM clubs.

BDSM clubs:

  • House of K: A dedicated kink, sex, and swinging venue in Whitby, in the wider Wellington region. It hosts kink parties and has a BDSM dungeon, crosses, suspension points and other play spaces.

Rope spaces:

  • Thistle Hall Community Venue: An inclusive community venue on Cuba Street in Te Aro that is used for Wellington rope socials. It’s a general community hall rather than a dedicated kink venue.

Swingers’ clubs:

  • Wellington Club Silverado: A members’ swingers club in Upper Hutt that runs events for couples and singles. It’s outside central Wellington but part of the wider regional scene.

LGBTQ+-friendly spaces:

  • Scotty and Mal's Cocktail and Lounge Bar: Long-running LGBTQ+-owned cocktail and lounge bar on Cuba Street. It runs shows and events, and plays host to a range of munches and other kink-friendly gatherings.
  • Ivy Bar: Queer bar and cabaret on Cuba Street with drag, DJs, karaoke, and other LGBTQ+ events.

Wellington has a mix of larger annual events and smaller community gatherings throughout the year.

Kink and BDSM events:

  • Capital Fetish Ball: Wellington’s annual fetish ball, with kink-themed performances, fetishwear and play spaces.
  • Kinky Capital Market: A kink-focused makers and vendors market held as part of Capital Weekend, alongside workshops and other events.
  • House of K parties: Regular kink and swinging parties in Whitby, including dedicated kink nights and themed events.
  • Fetish Bazaar Wellington: A small annual market featuring handmade kinky items from all over New Zealand.

Rope events:

  • Wellington rope socials: Regular community rope meetups are held at Thistle Hall in Te Aro.

LGBTQ+ events:

  • Wellington Pride Festival: The city’s major annual Pride celebration, with parties, performances, meetups, the Pride Parade and other community events.
  • Board Gaymes at TWK: A monthly LGBTQ+ board-game meetup in Lower Hutt.

If a full munch feels intimidating, look for more casual options like board game meetups or workshops, where it can be easier to connect over a shared interest. Some munches also include pre-munches, which are designed as lower-pressure introductions for newcomers.

Munches are for socializing and getting to know the community, not for hooking up. Check each event description for any details, and don’t be afraid to message the organizer beforehand if you’re new.

The safest way to join Wellington’s BDSM community is to start with its more public, low-pressure events and build connections gradually. Because the local scene is fairly private, getting to know people is often part of gaining access to smaller parties and play events.

Munches, rope socials, and beginner-friendly “tasting sessions” are good places to start. They let you meet organizers and regulars, learn local norms, and get a feel for the community before moving into more private spaces.

Take your time, check event rules, ask questions, and don’t feel pressured to play before you’re comfortable. In a smaller scene like Wellington’s, reputation and trust matter, so showing up consistently and respecting boundaries goes a long way.
