The book is one of the first times kink was presented as "mainstream" reading. It brought a large surge of interest and awareness to kink in the early 2010s, and a second surge in 2015 when the movie(s) came out.

"Fifty Shades Of Grey" has frequently gotten pushback in the kink community for the way it depicts a D/s relationship. The book involves consent issues, lack of safety discussion, and unrealistic depictions of kink activities. It also normalizes abusive/stalking behavior from a partner.
