Sex Party
A sex party is an event or gathering where people come together to engage in consensual sexual activities with others. Sex parties can vary in terms of size, organization, and specific rules or guidelines.
Sex parties can take place in private residences, clubs, or dedicated venues that cater to adult or alternative lifestyles. Participants may engage in activities such as partner swapping, group sex, voyeurism, exhibitionism, BDSM play, or other forms of consensual sexual exploration. The specific activities and boundaries at sex parties vary depending on the rules established by the organizers and the preferences of the participants. Unless explicitly stated in the rules, attendance at a sex party is not blanket consent to have sex with any of the other attendees.
This term is sometimes used interchangeably with swingers party but a sex party has a wider audience and includes folks who don't identify as swingers.
Sex parties may be advertised as "SOP," or sex on premises. This makes it clear that the event includes sex, and is not just a meet up or BDSM play without intercourse. In some countries, "SOP venues" is also a legal designation that's licensed differently from bars or strip clubs.

What Happens at a Sex Party
A sex party can be anything from a small, invite-only gathering in someone's home to hotel parties and large clubs with dedicated play spaces.
Either way, a typical night might look something like this:
- People arrive and settle in first. They may have a drink, chat, change or undress and look around before doing anything.
- People scope each other out. This is about sex, so attraction matters! People walk around, make eye contact, talk, and approach people they're interested in. Just like at a bar or on an app, interest isn't necessarily mutual, and rejection is normal.
- Sex starts in pockets rather than everywhere at once. A couple might start playing, someone else may join, several people may form a group, while others continue talking or watching. Some parties end up feeling more like lots of one-on-one encounters happening beside each other than one collective orgy.
- Watching can be a big part of it. Some people attend sex parties primarily as voyeurs, while others alternate between watching and participating. Some people love being watched too!
- Not everyone is having sex. Many people at sex parties just chat and watch. People also take breaks, hang out in kitchens or pools, get drinks, and then potentially return to the action.
- People choose what they do and who they do it with. Attending a sex party does not mean agreeing to sex with everyone—or anyone at all. People pair off according to attraction and interest and may decline offers or leave an interaction.
- Consent norms can vary by event. Some parties involve a lot of communication through eye contact, nodding and body language, while others explicitly require people to ask permission even to watch.
- It can be much more awkward than the fantasy. Sex parties can be sexy, but they can also be a lot. Sensory overload, performance anxiety, and a lot of just standing around are totally normal, especially for those who are new to it all.
How to Find or Get Invited to a Sex Party
Want to attend a sex party but don't know how? Here are some tips to help you find your way into the scene.
Get Into the Community
People are selective about who they invite into intimate spaces, so private sex parties tend to be invite-only. Public spaces may require vetting too. If you want to get invited, start making friends in kink communities, munches, and swinger spaces. You can find a lot of these events on FetLife. If you make friends over time and are respectful and fun to be around, the invites will come.
Be a Good Human
Being respectful, reliable, good at taking rejection, non-pushy, and socially competent carry real weight in sex-party communities. Be good to others, follow the rules at the events you do attend, and put consent first in your interactions.
Find the Right Fit
Sex parties come in many different flavors. They may be kinky, filled with swingers, poly people, BDSM-focused, or something else entirely. Find the groups that fit you best, and where you are most likely to fit in.
