Merkin

In kink and fetish contexts, a merkin is usually a small patch of hair, fur, or fabric that covers the genitals in a way that resembles pubic hair. It may be worn for aesthetic effect, roleplay, or costuming. Some people use merkins to conceal nudity in performances, while others enjoy them as a provocative and fun accessory. They can be made from hair, fur, or synthetic materials, and range from realistic styles to highly stylized designs (sequins, colors, shapes).

Some trans women or transfeminine people use merkins to create the look of a natural pubic area, especially after hair removal or bottom surgery. It can help enhance body congruence or reduce dysphoria, giving a more feminine or complete appearance that aligns with their gender expression. Some trans and nonbinary artists also use merkins to play with gender imagery, mixing masculine and feminine aesthetics. Merkins can also cover scars, tucking lines, or sensitive areas.

Origins of the Term

Originally dating back to the 15th century, merkins were first used by sex workers and later by stage actors for modesty. Today, they aren't common, but are sometimes worn for fun, as well as in film and TV, and burlesque and drag.

In 2025, the merkin made a bit of a reappearance in public when Kim Kardashian's clothing brand, Skims, released a skimpy, flesh-colored thong with faux hair on the front.
