Awareness Team

An awareness team is a group of volunteers or staff present at a BDSM event whose role is to monitor the space, support attendees and respond to concerns or incidents as they arise. They are sometimes also referred to as a dungeon monitor team, safety team or floor staff, depending on the event and community. Awareness team members are typically identifiable by a specific item of clothing, a badge or another visual marker so that attendees know who to approach. Their presence is intended to make events safer and more accessible, particularly for newer members of the community.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of an awareness team vary by event but commonly include: Monitoring play spaces to ensure scenes are conducted within the rules of the venue, checking in with attendees who appear distressed or disoriented, responding to consent violations or conflicts between attendees, providing or coordinating first aid in the event of injury and supporting individuals who are experiencing drop or require aftercare assistance. Awareness team members are generally not there to police play or make judgements about kink preferences, but to ensure the agreed rules of the space are followed and that all attendees can participate safely.

What to Bring to an Awareness Team

People serving on an awareness team are typically expected to have a solid grounding in BDSM safety practices, negotiation and consent frameworks. Experience with de-escalation, basic first aid and an understanding of drop and aftercare are commonly considered valuable. Some events require formal training or a period of shadowing before someone can serve independently.

Approaching the Awareness Team

Attendees are encouraged to approach awareness team members with any concern, however small it may seem. This includes witnessing a potential consent violation, feeling unsafe or uncomfortable, needing practical assistance, or simply being unsure whether something requires escalation. Awareness team members are not there only for emergencies, early intervention is generally preferable to waiting until a situation has escalated.
