Hard Limits

Hard limits are non-negotiable boundaries set by a BDSM practitioner. Although they can include certain toys or environments, they most often refer to specific types of play or the conditions under which scenes take place. Hard limits can include specific activities (such as breath play or blood play), certain power dynamics, particular language, or conditions such as never playing while intoxicated.

People set hard limits for many reasons, including personal preferences, past trauma, medical concerns, or emotional well-being. All reasons for setting hard limits are legitimate and must be respected. Failing to do so is a violation of consent.

Hard limits differ from soft limits because they allow no exceptions or negotiation under any circumstances. Soft limits, by contrast, are activities someone is hesitant or cautious about but may be willing to explore under the right conditions. Treating a hard limit as negotiable or trying to persuade someone to change it is considered a serious breach of trust. Both types of limits should be discussed during negotiation.

Safety and Consent

Hard limits are a core part of BDSM consent frameworks. Respecting clearly established limits is fundamental to ethical play. Crossing a hard limit, whether intentionally or accidentally, is considered a consent violation and should be treated seriously. This may include stopping the scene immediately, checking in with the affected person, and discussing what happened afterward.

While hard limits should always be treated as absolute once they are established, they are not necessarily permanent. A person's hard limits may change over time as they gain experience, process past trauma, or simply change as a person. Any change should come from the individual and be communicated clearly. It should never be assumed or pressured by a partner.
