Sword Lesbian
A sword lesbian is an informal term for a lesbian or other sapphic person who likes swords, identifies with sword-wielding women, or finds women with swords especially attractive. It can also describe fictional lesbian or sapphic-coded characters who fight with swords.
The appeal is often pretty straightforward: many people think swords are cool, which can make women with swords attractive. But the image can also carry ideas of strength, independence, confidence, skill, and rebellion against traditional expectations of how women are supposed to behave.
There is no set personality or look that makes someone a sword lesbian. The term is usually playful and is often used as an internet, fandom, or queer-culture identity.
The “sword” usually means an actual sword. It is not a sexual euphemism.
Origins of the Term
The exact origin of sword lesbian is unclear, but the term appears to have grown out of queer Tumblr and fandom culture in the mid-to-late 2010s. It was already being used as a meme and playful form of self-identification by 2017, when definitions for both swordbian and sword lesbian appeared online.
The term became popular in queer online spaces and was later made more visible by "Thirsty Sword Lesbians," a queer tabletop role-playing game created by April Kit Walsh. The game won the Nebula Award for Best Game Writing in 2022.
The idea itself is older than the name. Sword-wielding women have long been popular in lesbian and sapphic fandom, where characters who fight with swords can represent strength, independence, chivalry, and a rejection of traditional female roles. Characters such as Xena, Warrior Princess and the anime character Utena are often mentioned as earlier examples of this appeal.
