Vacuum Pump

A vacuum pump is a device that creates pressure by removing air. It can be applied to different parts of the body to create different effects and sensations. These devices are commonly either driven by mechanical pumps, electrical or battery-operated pumps, or rarely, by chemical processes to create a pressure difference. The pressure can be used for pain, pleasure, as a form of stretching, or to cause swelling.

Types of Pumps

  • Penis Pump: Creates vacuum pressure around the penis, drawing blood into erectile tissue. Used for erection enhancement or temporary enlargement.
  • Ball / Testicle Pump: Applies suction to the scrotum or testicles for sensitivity or visual swelling. Requires careful pressure control.
  • Vulva / Pussy Pump: Uses a cup to draw blood into the vulva, causing swelling and increased sensitivity.
  • Clitoral Pump: A smaller version focused on the clitoris for precise suction and stimulation.
  • Nipple Pump: Creates suction over one or both nipples, heightening sensitivity or preparing them for clamps.
  • Breast Pump: Larger suction devices that swell the breasts for sensation or visual impact.
  • Anal Inflatable Plug: Expands internally rather than through suction; often used for fullness or control play.
  • Vacuum Bed / Vacuum Bondage: Uses an air pump to remove air from a latex enclosure around the body, immobilizing the bottom for sensory restraint or visual effect.

How Vacuum Pumps Work

Typically, there are three primary components of a pump used in sex or kink play. There's the pump itself, a chamber (typically a cylinder or cup), and a hose that goes between the pump and the chamber. Air is suctioned out of the chamber through the hose. Some devices have a small pump permanently attached to a chamber. Those systems have no hose.

Pumps usually are mechanical or electrical. Mechanical pumps, like hand pumps, are the least expensive. There are also mechanical devices that have a screwing mechanism that’s attached to a small chamber. These are usually used directly on nipples or genitals.

A pinch and place mechanism for semi-rigid cups is also available. These return to their original shape after they have been pinched. When they are placed and released, this creates lower pressure and suction inside the device. Both of these mechanisms are often less powerful than a larger mechanical or electrical pump. They are therefore more suited for softer tissues like nipples or genitals. These types of cups may be referred to as "suckers" (e.g, nipple suckers).

An electrical pump sucks the air out of the cylinder or cup. Many (not all) of these are battery-powered. Some of the electrical pumps can be set to maintain a constant pressure, or they can be set to go through cycles of varying pressures, or both.

The more rigid chambers can be used for softer tissues, but should be used with care to avoid bruising or blistering. They can be used to increase blood circulation and temporarily increase the size of the genitals. They can potentially also be a part of stretching play. These chambers are designed to fit the genitals that they are meant for, and so provide a better vacuum seal. The pressure of the pumping can be very pleasurable, and because of increased blood accumulation, they can create more sensitive and temporarily larger genitalia.

One of the most common chamber shapes is the rigid cylinder. They’re available in a wide variety of diameters and lengths from several manufacturers. They’re designed to fit penises, penises and testicles together, or testicles by themselves. Some have a smaller cylinder that attaches to a larger cylinder. These are called “two-stage” cylinders.

Other common rigid shapes are oval chambers (“pussy pumps”), clamshell chambers like the Monster-Tube, modified cylinders like the BullMaster, spheres, etc. Some of these rigid chambers are used in cupping, but there are also other specialized devices made for kink.

Fire Cupping

Fire cupping is a harsher version of vacuum pumping and involves a form of fire play. It comes from cupping therapy, and uses a cotton ball soaked in alcohol that is set on fire. This uses up all the oxygen in the cup while it is placed on the skin and creates a pressure difference, causing the vacuum effect. This is often done on a person's back. It can result in pain, but may also offer a form of muscular release.

Safety and Consent

Over-pumping can cause bruising, broken capillaries, or nerve damage. Always use pumps with release valves, monitor pressure, and avoid prolonged use. Check skin color and temperature frequently; discontinue immediately if numbness or pain occurs.
