Trichomoniasis

Trichomoniasis is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by a parasite.

Symptoms: Many people don't have symptoms, but they can include itching, burning, or unusual discharge in the genital area. Men might experience irritation inside the penis or mild discharge.

Testing: A healthcare provider can diagnose trichomoniasis by testing a sample from the affected area, usually through a swab or urine test.

Transmission: It's primarily spread through sexual contact. The parasite that causes trichomoniasis can infect the vagina, urethra, or both.

Treatment: It's usually treated with antibiotics, often a single dose. Both partners should be treated to prevent reinfection.

Risks if Untreated: If left untreated, trichomoniasis can increase the risk of getting or spreading other STIs, including HIV. In pregnant women, it can lead to premature birth or low birth weight.
