Queefing

Queefing refers to the release of air from the vagina, often making a sound similar to a fart. It’s sometimes called a vaginal fart, though it has no relation to digestion or or intestinal gas. The sound is simply air being expelled from the vaginal canal.

Queefing can happen during sex, masturbation, exercise, or stretching, especially when penetration or movement pushes air inside the vagina. Queefing is often unintentional, but some people also do it intentionally for their or their partner's enjoyment.

What to Do About Queefing

Queefing is normal and mostly unavoidable. But it's also one of those moments that can pull you out of your head and into self-consciousness—especially if you’ve been taught to keep sex “quiet” or “graceful.” But bodies make sounds, and that sound is just proof that air went somewhere delightful and is finding its way out.

How you and your partner respond often shapes the experience more than the sound itself. Many couples laugh about, normalize it, and move on. (Some people say using lube or experimenting with different positions can help if it really bothers you.)
