Swaffelen

Swaffelen is a Dutch term for swinging, tapping, or slapping a flaccid or semi-erect penis against another person or object, often repeatedly.

Swaffelen has been associated with crude humor, teasing, pranks, and humiliation. But in a kink or sexual context, people may swaffel a partner as part of consensual humiliation, penis play, or just for the fun of it.

Historically, the term has also been used to describe unwanted or public acts, which shouldn't be confused with consensual sexual or BDSM play.

Origins of the Term Swaffelen

Swaffelen comes from an older Dutch/Flemish word meaning to swing or move something back and forth. Its modern penis-related meaning became widely known in 2008, after a Dutch student was filmed swinging his penis against the Taj Mahal in India.

The modern meaning gained national attention in April 2008, when a Dutch student was filmed swinging or rubbing his penis against the Taj Mahal during a school trip to India. The incident was reported widely in the Dutch media and helped bring the previously obscure slang term into mainstream use.

The student later said he had first heard the word at a hockey camp about five years earlier, suggesting that the penis-related meaning was already circulating by the early 2000s. By the end of 2008, swaffelen had become so well known that it was voted the Netherlands' Word of the Year.

The term was occasionally documented in English before 2008, probably through Dutch speakers explaining or translating their slang. But it appears to have really crossed over into English around late 2008–2009, following the publicity surrounding the Taj Mahal incident and its selection as Dutch Word of the Year.
