DemiFemme
Demifemme is a gender identity that describes someone who partially identifies with femininity or being a woman, but not fully.
DemiFemmes may feel some alignment with traditional feminine traits or roles, but do not identify entirely as women. They may use she/her/, they/them, or other pronouns.
Demifemme vs Demigirl
Demigirl usually means identifying partly as a girl or woman. Demifemme is broader: it can mean identifying partly with femininity or a femme-aligned gender without necessarily identifying as a girl or woman.
There’s a lot of overlap, and some people use the terms interchangeably.
Origins of the Term Demifemme
The term demifemme is believed to have been coined on Tumblr in October of 2018. It was presented as an alternative for people who related to identities such as demigirl but were uncomfortable using explicitly gendered words such as "girl," "woman," or "female" in their label. (The term demigirl was already in use by 2010, when it appeared on AVEN.)
Demifemme was in community use by at least 2020. For example, a September 2020 Reddit post uses demifemme as an established self-description. Later that year, another post announced a dedicated demifemme community for people who felt uncomfortable with the demigirl label.
