Genderfuck
Genderfuck is a form of gender expression that challenges traditional ideas about gender by mixing traits that are typically seen as masculine (such as a beard) and feminine (such as a dress). The name literally means to "fuck with" or deliberately disrupt conventional gender roles and expectations.
For some people, genderfuck reflects their gender identity. For others, it's simply a style of dress or an outfit worn for a particular event. Some people who identify with genderfuck also reject the idea that gender is a meaningful social construct.
Genderfuck has some overlap with genderqueer, but genderfuck aims to be more aggressive. Those who identify this way are looking to "fuck up" gender "norms," and societal gender "standards."
Genderpunk is another term that's closely related to genderfuck and is often used interchangeably. Both describe challenging traditional gender norms. Genderpunk may place more emphasis on the punk philosophy of resisting gender expectations. Genderfuck traditionally emphasizes deliberately disrupting or parodying gender presentation.
Origins of the Term
The term genderfuck emerged in the early 1970s within gay liberation and queer activist communities. It combines gender with the slang phrase "fuck with," meaning to deliberately challenge or disrupt traditional ideas about gender. The term gained wider recognition after activist Christopher Lonc's 1974 essay "Genderfuck and Its Delights," which argued that subverting gender expectations was a form of political expression.
The term continued to pop up in LGBTQ writing through the decades. Google Search data suggests the term gained some traction online in 2007, and started being searched more regularly in 2009.
