Omnigender

Omnigender is a gender identity in which a person experiences many or all genders, either simultaneously or fluidly.

This term is similar to and sometimes used interchangeably with pangender. Some people distinguish omnigender as identifying with many or all genders while experiencing them as separate or distinct, whereas pangender refers more broadly to identifying with all genders. Others use the two terms as synonyms.

Origins of the Term

Omnigender combines the Latin "omni," which means "all," with "gender," so it literally means "all genders."

The earliest documented use of the term may be in Virginia Mollenkott's 2001 book, "Omnigender: A Trans-Religious Approach." However, Mollenkott used omnigender very differently from its modern LGBTQ meaning. In her work, an omnigender society referred to one that does not distinguish or discriminate between genders. Instead, it is gender-inclusive or gender-neutral.

By the 2010s, omnigender had been adopted within online LGBTQ communities as a multigender identity. Google Search data shows the term started being searched online in 2017.
