Pyrophilia
Pyrophilia refers to sexual arousal from being around fire, being safely lit on fire, safely lighting others on fire, or seeing others be safely lit on fire. It differs from pyromania, which involves recurrent urges to set fires and is not defined by sexual gratification. Pyrophilia also should not be confused with BDSM fire play, since people may enjoy fire play for its sensation or psychological intensity without being sexually attracted to fire itself.
Origins of the Term Pyrophilia
The word pyrophilia combines "pyro," from the Greek "pyr" meaning “fire,” with "philia," which means love, attraction, or affinity. Literally, it means an attraction to fire.
The term pyrophilia has been used in psychiatric and sexological literature since at least the 1970s. A 1978 psychiatric case report was explicitly titled “A case of pyrophilia.” Earlier writers had already described sexual arousal connected with fire-setting, usually under terms such as pyromania, or fire fetishism.
Google Search data suggests that public search interest in “pyrophilia” remained extremely low until around 2012, after which the term began appearing intermittently in search data. This suggests that broader online interest or visibility was limited before the early 2010s.
