Stigmatophilia
Stigmatophilia is a sexual attraction to partners who are marked, scarred, or visibly modified, such as those with tattoos, piercings, or body scars.
Early definitions focused on scarring, but the term now includes tattoos and intimate piercings, especially when they are in erogenous zones. Some people are aroused by having such marks themselves, while others are drawn to partners who do. It is a relatively rare interest; about 4% of 5,000 online fetishists surveyed reported having it.
Stimatophilia can manifest as attraction to heavily tattooed or heavily pierced bodies, and therefore tends to overlap with body modification culture and scarification play. It can be based on D/s, where a submissive undergoes a tattoo, scarring, or some other painful physical reminder of the Dominant's power and control. It can also just be be based on aesthetic attraction, where the look or texture of marked skin is seen as attractive, or a symbol of rebellion, resilience, or self-expression.
Origins of the Term
The name comes from the Greek stigma (“mark”) and philia (“love of”). The term was coined and discussed by sexologist John Money, and later classified among the “eligibility paraphilias” by Dr. Anil Aggrawal, where desire focuses on partners seen as different or marked.
