Wetlook
Wetlook is a kink in which people are turned on by people being soaking wet while fully clothed. Frequently, this kink is enjoyed as a visual thrill, though people may engage in sex after soaking someone, or becoming soaked themselves.
The community around wetlook often refers to themselves as "wetters". However, note that this name is also used in watersports and diaper-wearing communities.
Specific subgroups of wetters include:
- Get-Wets: Those who like to get wet. They are focused on the methods in which the wetting happens, and may find a flow state in the act of getting wet itself, rather than only enjoying the physical appearance.
- Jumpers: Those who particularly enjoy seeing, causing, or being soaked themselves, often unexpectedly. This usually happens through (consensual) surprise or trickery, and may also involve aspects of humiliation or embarrassment ("Oh no! The party is in 5 minutes and someone pushed me into the fountain! I don't have time to change!")
- Walkers: Those who like the anticipation as much as, if not more than, the wetlook itself. Walkers prefer watching someone slowly become wet, whether by walking into water, standing under a gently running hose, or getting caught in a light rain or barely running shower. They may also enjoy engaging in this themselves.
- Stay-Wets: Those who find the attraction greater when the clothing is worn outside the water, and/or left to linger on the body after the active "wetting."
- Messies: Wetlook appreciators that enjoy, or even prefer, fluids other than water, such as slime, mud, juice, etc. Closely related to wet and messy (WAM) play.
Other terms used within the community, including:
- Phat Dipping: A term coined in 2009 based on a song by Rhett And Link titled "Phatdipping Rap." It encourages people to jump fully clothed into a pool, and was later used to encourage people to upload their own videos of them doing so. This has taken off as a term for a fully-clothed pool party or simply deliberately entering a pool while completely clothed. The term name comes from the opposite of "skinny dipping," which refers to swimming nude.
- Wetfun: A term for the fetishistic and erotic enjoyment gained from being soaked, or seeing others get soaked.
Origins of the Term
The exact origin of the term wetlook is unknown, but the term was defined in "The Joy of Sex," published in 1972. The name is straightforward, referring to the visual appearance of clothing and hair after becoming soaked with water. By the 1980s, the term was being widely used within fetish communities to describe sexual interest in wet clothing, and it remains the standard name for the fetish today.
Why People Are Into It
People are into wetlook for many different reasons. Here are a few:
- Sensory Enjoyment: The feeling of wet clothing stuck to the body can be likened to a "second skin," rather like latex kink.
- Voyeurism/Exhibitionism: Wet clothing outlines the body, making the covered body parts more visible. Some clothing turns semi-transparent, as well, potentially giving the feeling of a clandestine and taboo "peek" at someone's intimate areas. Many wetters will wear slightly translucent clothing for this effect.
- Humiliation: The idea of being soaked, especially accidentally or having it inflicted, can tap into humiliation kinks for some people.
- Transgression: People are not meant to be fully clothed and soaking wet. Therefore, for those who enjoy the feeling of transgression, it can be a low-stakes way to get that thrill of 'breaking the rules', even when in a consensual atmosphere. Some people especially enjoy the feeling of transgression that comes with wetting expensive clothing.
