Splosh
Splosh is a specific type of wet and messy and food play in which usually the bottom, though potentially both partners, have various types of food thrown at, poured, or otherwise smeared onto them. This is done in order to become messy or coated with it. While eating the food may be part of the play, the majority of the play involves the deliberate messiness of the food being smeared onto the person's body.
Preferred types of food for this tend to be things that are sticky, messy, and frequently "gross" in some form or another. For instance, Jello wrestling could be seen as a form of splosh. Other common favorites are moist pastries such as cakes and pies, melted chocolate and caramel, soft fruit such as bananas, and semiliquid foods like puddings and flan.
Origins of the Term
The term splosh became associated with wet and messy fetishism through Splosh!, a British fetish magazine launched in 1989 by Clive Harris, who published under the name Bill Shipton, and his partner Hayley. The magazine became so closely identified with this type of play that sploshing eventually developed into a general name for the fetish.
The word itself is much older. Splosh was already used in English to imitate the sound of something landing heavily in water or another wet substance. Shipton reportedly chose the name because it sounded fun and suggested something both wet and messy.
Why People Are Into It
People enjoy sploshing for different reasons. The appeal often combines several of the following:
The Sensations
Wet, thick, slippery or sticky substances create strong full-body sensations. Temperature, texture, smell, taste and sound can all contribute, making sploshing an unusually immersive form of sensory play.
Visual Transformations
Some people are turned on by watching a clean body or carefully chosen outfit become gradually covered. The colors, shine, movement and changing appearance can be as important as how the substances feel.
Going Overboard
A little whipped cream may be ordinary food play. Sploshing often involves buckets of the stuff. That excess can be part of the spectacle and fun!
Playfulness and Silliness
Sploshing can resemble a food fight or an old-fashioned pie-in-the-face comedy routine. For some people, laughing and acting ridiculous are part of the appeal and fun.
Breaking the Rules
People are normally expected to stay clean, avoid wasting food, and protect their clothes. Deliberately doing the opposite can feel naughty, rebellious, and freeing.
Power and Humiliation
Being covered in something messy can be used as playful punishment, embarrassment or submission. The person applying the mess may take a dominant role, while the recipient may enjoy surrendering control or being made to look undignified. Other scenes reverse the power dynamic through revenge fantasies, such as an employee ruining a strict boss’s expensive outfit.
Clothing Fetishes
For some people, the real focus is a particular outfit, fabric or style of clothing. Filling clothes with something wet, ruining a pristine outfit or watching material cling to the body can add another layer to an existing clothing fetish.
Health and Safety Concerns With Splosh:
- Sugary and sticky foods should be kept away from intimate areas, especially vaginas; unless thoroughly removed, yeast can grow and cause great discomfort.
- Melted chocolate, caramel, and the like need to be carefully temperature checked before play; sugar's boiling point can cause severe burns, and the sugar will stick to skin, making the damage worse
- Always make sure of food allergies before applying the food even externally. Someone allergic to peanuts, for instance, could have a severe reaction to peanut butter applied externally as well as internally.
- While some people do enjoy eating the food used in splosh as part of the play, it should be considered risky, as it is coming into prolonged contact with air, bodies, and potentially contaminated ground as well.
- Before setting up for splosh play, make certain there is a way for the person to get clean when finished. Clinging food can invite bacteria, and while it's likely to not be much of an issue, skin irritation or infection could occur if left too long. Sweet foods, in particular, can cause overgrowths of yeast (see above).
- Many parties do not allow splosh play, or only in designated areas. Always ask beforehand before planning a scene at an event.
