Boot Blacking
Boot blacking is the care, cleaning, and polishing of leather boots or gear, often performed by one person (the bootblack) in service to another (typically a leather dominant or high-protocol top). In kink and leather communities, it is both a practical service and a ritualized act of devotion, submission, and respect.
Boot blacking scenes don't have to be sexual. They can be completely non-sexual or just sensual depending on the people involved. The bootblack may be submissive or dominant, depending on dynamic and context.
Boot blacking can involve:
- Cleaning, conditioning, and shining leather boots, shoes, or gear.
- Brushing, rubbing, polishing by hand, and even using spit, breath, or body heat to achieve the perfect shine.
- Public (e.g., at leather bars, events, or contests) or private (private scene) activity.
Why People Are Into It
People are into boot blacking for a number of reasons, but here are some of the more common ones:
- Service and devotion: The act shows deep care, submission, and reverence for the dominant’s possessions and, by extension, the dominant themself.
- Worship and fetish: For some, the boots are fetishized objects of power. Kneeling, touching, or kissing boots can be acts of submission, humiliation, or lust.
- Connection to old-guard leather culture: Boot blacking is deeply rooted in gay leather history, where it symbolized brotherhood, respect, and earned hierarchy.
- Public performance: At some events, bootblacks shine boots for the community, offering service while showcasing their skill and pride in leather care.
