Percussion Play
In BDSM, percussion play is a form of impact play in which rhythm, tempo, and repetition are used to strike the body in a patterned or musical way. Instead of focusing purely on pain or punishment, percussion play emphasizes sensory rhythm, anticipation, and altered headspace through steady impacts.
The “percussion” may come from:
- Hands (spanking, slapping, tapping)
- Implements (floggers, paddles, canes, crops, whips)
- Body percussion (cupping, rhythmic chest/hip impacts)
- Surface tapping to build tension and focus
Percussion play can create a drum-like rhythm on the skin, which can lead to a trance-like state, both for the Dominant and the submissive. The Dominant typically builds the intensity of the percussion over time, and partners can share a deepened connection through synchronization and breath. For some people, the percussion is also a form of creative expression.
Safety and Consent
When playing with percussion, all of the same safety guidelines that apply to any impact play will apply here. That includes:
- Checking in frequently to make sure your partner is doing OK.
- Avoiding kidneys, tailbone, and joints.
- Being mindful of potential bruising (and knowing whether your partner is OK with bruising and where.)
- Starting slowly to avoid muscle shock.
- Establishing safe words or nonverbal signals if speech is impaired
