Non-Sexual Kink
Non-sexual kink refers to kink activities, dynamics, or forms of expression that are not primarily motivated by sexual arousal, sexual gratification, or orgasm.
While many people experience kink sexually, sexual arousal is not a necessary component for all kink practitioners or all kink activities. In fact, kink can be (and often is) pursued for many different reasons, including:
- Sensation
- Emotional experiences
- Mental stimulation
- Adrenaline
- Bonding
- Intimacy
- Self-expression
- Stress relief
- Personal growth
- Community participation
Sex may not be involved at all, and even when it is, it may not be the primary motivation.
Non-sexual kink is a broad category that includes non-sexual BDSM as well as kink activities that may not fall under BDSM.
Kinks activities that can be practiced in non-sexual ways include:
- Rope bondage
- Pet play
- Service submission
- Power exchange
- Dominance and submission (D/s)
- Caregiver dynamics
- Age play
- Hypnosis
- Objectification play
- Roleplay
- Leather Identity
- Collaring
- Impact play
Non-Sexual Kink Statistics
- A 2015 study of asexual BDSM practitioners found that participation in BDSM was a means of forming intimate (but non-sexual) relationships. This suggests that BDSM can have benefits in a relationship, even when sexual attraction is not present.
- A 2016 survey of BDSM participants found that BDSM often exhibited characteristics of "serious leisure," including skill development, identity formation, community involvement, and long-term participation.
- A 2019 review paper suggested that no single framework adequately explains BDSM participation, , which may be experienced as sexuality, identity, leisure, or a combination of all three.
