More like guidelines and a lot less like definitions.

The act of sexually stimulating a person to the point of orgasm, but not going over the edge to actually have an orgasm. This can be done by one's self, but also together with a partner. This can be considered part of orgasm play.

The goal of edging is to maintain the sensation of almost having an orgasm for a longer time and even reach an edge multiple times. There are also people that use this in a dynamic where a s-type person is allowed to edge, but not have an orgasm till a later time where the d-type person allows them to orgasm.

For some people edging is known to increase sexual pleasure and researchers so far have not found any negative side effects (source). Some people claim that it can create "blue balls" and that has a negative effect on the health of a person with testicles, however this is considered a myth (source).
