Party & Play

Party and play (PnP) refers to the use of recreational drugs or other psychoactive substances in combination with sexual activity. It is sometimes also called chemsex, H&H (high and horny), pharmacosex, or wired play, though these terms can have slightly different meanings depending on the community or region.

People may combine sex with substances ranging from alcohol and cannabis to stimulants like cocaine, methamphetamine, mephedrone, or MDMA, as well as drugs such as GHB/GBL and "poppers." The goal is often to intensify sensation, lower inhibitions, prolong sex, or create a stronger sense of connection and sexual freedom.

PnP can take place in many settings, from hookups and group sex to BDSM scenes, clubs, bathhouses, or private parties that stretch on for hours. Although people across many communities participate, the term chemsex is most closely associated with gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM). Poppers also have a long association with queer sexual culture, especially in club and bathhouse settings.

Because party and play can involve impaired judgment, addiction risks, overdose, blurred consent, and increased STI exposure, discussions around PnP often emphasize harm reduction, communication, and ongoing consent.
