Noetisexual
Noetisexual describes someone who experiences sexual attraction to a person’s mental landscape, such as their way of thinking, perceiving, processing, imagining, reasoning, expressing humor, or making emotional and intellectual space for others. The term focuses on attraction to a person’s inner world rather than their physical appearance, gender, or traditional “intelligence” markers.
People who identify as noetisexual may be drawn to:
- Someone’s worldview or perspective.
- Creativity, imagination, or playfulness.
- Emotional intelligence or introspection.
- Unique communication styles.
- The feeling of being “held,” seen, or understood mentally.
While often compared to sapiosexuality, noetisexuality is not solely about intelligence. It centers on a person’s internal landscape, not their IQ or academic mind.
Some individuals also use noetisexual to describe a demisexual-like experience in which sexual attraction arises only after forming a deep mental or intellectual bond.
Origins of the Term
The term noetisexual was coined by author and intersexuality expert Michon Neal on October 28, 2016 as an alternative to sapiosexual.
The word comes from “noetic,” rooted in the Greek "noētikos," which means “of the mind, intellect, or inner knowing." Noetic refers to intuitive understanding, deep perception, insight, and mental presence.
Michon Neal describes it as:
“It’s a mental attraction rather than a purely intellectual one. It’s loving the shape of someone’s mental landscape and wanting to explore it—their creativity, their ingenuity, their humor, their emotional intelligence, the way they use words, the way they make space for you in their mind, and more.”
