Uranic

Uranic is a sexual orientation in which a person is attracted to men, masculine non-binary, or neutral/non-binary individuals. Basically, uranic people are attracted to all genders except women and feminine-aligned individuals. The feminine equivalent of uranic is neptunic.

Uranian may also be referred to as a nofemsexual.

Many nonbinary people find mainstream terms like “gay” or “straight” don’t fully capture their experience. The term uranic allows people (especially nonbinary folks) to describe attraction patterns that include men and masculine-presenting nonbinary people without being tied to binary assumptions. It also helps people avoid being mislabeled or misgendered in ways that using some terms like "gay" or "lesbian" might do.

Origins of the Term

The term uranic has a long history with multiple origins and multiple meanings. "Uranian" comes from Aphrodite Urania, a form of the Greek goddess Aphrodite. Aphrodite was born from Uranus (the sky god), and was seen as representing pure, spiritual love.

In the late 1800s, "uranian" became a coded term used to describe same-sex love between men. It was mostly used by activists and writers.

Uranic emerged in around the 2010s as a label to refer to attraction to men and masculine-aligned enbies. It may have evolved separately, but with with similar roots to uranian.
