Quoisexual
Quoisexual describes a person who finds the concept of sexual attraction confusing or inapplicable to themselves. This orientation is considered to be on the asexual spectrum.
A quoisexual person may:
- Be unsure about whether they experience sexual attraction.
- Have difficulty distinguishing sexual attraction from romantic, aesthetic, sensual, or other forms of attraction.
- Feel that “sexual attraction” does not make sense as a concept.
- Reject sexual orientation categories because they do not reflect how they experience attraction.
Origins of the Term
The term quoisexual emerged within Tumblr’s asexual and grey-asexual communities in 2014.
Its prefix comes from the French word "quoi," meaning “what.” It was developed from quoiromantic, a term coined by Tumblr user epochryphal, also known as Cor, as an alternative to WTFromantic or whatromantic. The new prefix was easier to pronounce and abbreviate, and captured the feeling of asking, “What even is romantic attraction?”
Members of the community soon extended the same idea to sexual attraction, producing quoisexual.
