Pearling
Pearling is the surgical or semi-surgical insertion of small beads - often made of silicone, Teflon, titanium, steel, or other biocompatible materials - beneath the skin of the penis (shaft or foreskin) or occasionally the labia or other genital areas. It is considered a form of body modification.
The beads form raised bumps under the skin, which remain permanently unless removed. As well as being an aesthetic practice, this is usually intended to enhance the sexual pleasure of partners during vaginal or anal intercourse.
Origins of the Terms
Although the practice of pearling is believed to be quite rare overall, it has some cultural roots in Japan, Southeast Asia, and the Philippines. The custom is prevalent among some Filipino seafarers, for example. A 1999 study found that over 50% of Filipino seamen surveyed in Manila had these implants, which they call "bolitas."
