Handfasted
Handfasted, as a relationship status, usually refers to a ceremonial or symbolic union between partners, often rooted in pagan, Wiccan, or alternative spiritual traditions. It typically represents a deep emotional or spiritual commitment, similar to marriage, but not necessarily legally recognized.
In the kink community, handfasting can also serve as:
- A symbolic collaring or D/s commitment ritual
- A way to formalize a non-traditional or polyamorous bond
- A celebration of partnership outside legal or religious institutions
Origins of the Term
Handfasting is an ancient Celtic ritual and one of the earliest recognized forms of marriage under Brehon Law, originating in Ireland and often traced back thousands of years. It is also the source of the expression “tying the knot.” Traditionally, a druid priest would bind the couple’s hands together as a symbol of their union.
This commitment typically lasted for “a year and a day.” At the end of that period, the couple could choose to renew their vows, formalize their marriage, or part ways, depending on how the relationship had developed.
