Sologamous
To be sologamous is to marry oneself. This may occur in a symbolic, non-legally binding ceremony that represents a personal commitment to self-love, independence, and growth. Rather than seeking validation through partnership, the sologamist declares that fulfillment and devotion can exist entirely within the self. Sologamy may also be called autogamy
While society often defines love and success through relationships, sologamy reclaims the narrative, affirming that wholeness doesn’t depend on another person’s presence. Most sologamists see it as a ritual that centers self-respect and agency. Many use the practice as a milestone for healing, empowerment, or transformation, particularly after emotional hardship or major life change, such as a divorce.
Sologamy also serves as a declaration of sovereignty in both emotional and erotic realms. Within kink, it may symbolize self-ownership, body autonomy, and devotion to one’s own pleasure and evolution.
Sologamists tend to:
- Create personal rituals of affirmation, such as rings, vows, or tokens.
- Use self-marriage as a form of healing, empowerment, or closure.
- Reject societal expectations that equate singlehood with incompleteness.
- Celebrate autonomy while remaining open to connection or future relationships.
- Treat self-pleasure, self-care, and self-discovery as sacred acts.
- View love as something cultivated inward, not granted outward.
Origins of the Term
Sologamy began appearing in English-language media in the early 2000s, describing a few high-profile self-marriage ceremonies. The term gained more visibility around 2007–2010, when Lisa Kudrow's character on "Friends" referred to marrying herself (but did not use the term.) By the 2010s, it had entered broader discourse, and was often linked to self-love, independence, and feminist or spiritual empowerment movements.
