Heteronormativity
Heteronormativity refers to the assumption that all relationships are between cisgender, heterosexual people. Heteronormativity expects that:
- People fall into two distinct, complementary sexes (male/female).
- Men are romantically/sexually attracted to women, and women to men.
- Traditional gender roles (masculine man, feminine woman) are the norm and ideal.
Heteronormativity is the idea that being heterosexual is the “default” or “normal” way to be. This mindset assumes everyone is naturally heterosexual and treats that as the ideal, which can make other sexualities seem less valid or invisible. It can also create social stigma or discrimination toward queer relationships, and pressure people into suppressing their orientations or gender identity.
Origins of the Term
The term “heteronormativity” was coined by Michael Warner, a queer theorist, in 1991. It first appeared in his introduction to the anthology "Fear of a Queer Planet: Queer Politics and Social Theory." Although Warner gave us the word, the ideas behind it developed over decades. The term soon became standard terminology in sociology, gender studies, media analysis, and queer activism.
