Suspension Bondage
Suspension bondage is the practice of using a hardpoint or suspension frame to lift or hang a bound person off the ground. This can be either a full suspension, or a partial suspension (also referred to as semi-suspension), depending on whether the person being tied is still supporting part of their body weight on the floor.
Suspension bondage is most common in forms of rope bondage, however chains, cuffs, and plastic wrap are also used for this practice. The methods of suspending or lifting a person that is bound are vastly different and there is a wide range of options.
Why do People Like This?
Suspension bondage can give people several interesting sensations. For many, the floating feeling is nice as they are restricted by the bondage, and feel the pressure of the suspension. In rope bondage, it is also common that a person is put into a certain shape. Letting go of control and being made into a beautiful pose can add to the experience. Suspension bondage can also be uncomfortable as a result of pressure or holding a certain position for a longer period of time, which some people like. These factors can all make for an amazing experience for the person being suspended.
For the person doing the suspension as rigger, there are also several reasons why they would do it. This can range from the nerdy technical side in terms of how to get a person lifted safely, to the trust the bound person must put in the rigger. The rigger may also get to control another person's body. These can all contribute to making this an interesting experience.
Full vs Partial Suspension
The definition of what is considered a full and what is considered a partial suspension may differ from person to person. Some adhere to the concept that if any part of a bound person touches the floor, it is a partial suspension. Others believe there needs to be some level of significant support for it to be considered a partial suspension. People may also consider it based on what risk profile or safety concerns you'd need to mitigate while doing a full vs. a partial suspension.
Safety
Suspension bondage is considered by many to be edge play. There are considerable risks when it comes to pressure points like nerves, joints, and other tissues that can be damaged when doing a suspension. Getting proper education for the person doing the suspension, and for the person being suspended, is key to be able to negotiate consent safely.
