Furry

A furry is someone who enjoys or identifies with or has interest in anthropomorphic animal characters - think wolves that talk, foxes with feelings, or bunnies that walk upright and wear cute hoodies. This interest can manifest in various ways, including art, storytelling, roleplay, costuming, and, yes, kink.

The furry community includes individuals of various ages, backgrounds, and interests, and that participation can range from casual appreciation to deep involvement.

Core Aspects of a Furry

  • Fursona: Many furries create a fursona, an anthropomorphic animal character that reflects aspects of themselves. Fursonas can be any species, real or mythical, and serve as avatars in the community.
  • Expression: Furries express their interest through various means—some wear full fursuits, others don accessories like ears and tails, and many engage through digital art, writing, or online avatars.
  • Community and Fandom: The furry fandom is a diverse and inclusive community that gathers both online and at conventions to share creative works and socialize.

Furries Vs. Pet Play

So, is this the same as pet play? While both involve animal characteristics, furries focus on anthropomorphic characters in creative and social contexts, whereas pet play is a form of roleplay within BDSM dynamics.

  • Furries: Usually identify as anthropomorphic animals. It's about the character and the creativity—storytelling, art, and playful identity.
  • Pet Players: Usually roleplay as animals in a kink or D/s context—like being a kitten for their Dom/me. It’s more about the dynamic than the character. Wearing ears and a tail doesn’t automatically make someone a furry. And being a furry doesn’t mean they’re into pet play. Respect the nuance! That said, there is overlap here, particularly in individual identities!

Sexuality and Furry Fandom

Some furries explore kink or sexuality through their fursonas. Some don’t. The fandom covers everything from wholesome hugs to full-on howls in the bedroom. Just like with any community, consent and clarity go a long way.

Respecting Individual Preferences

Furry isn’t a kink in itself but for some, it blends beautifully with kink, roleplay, or identity. Since terminology and identification can vary widely among individuals, it's always best to refer to people by the terms they prefer.
