Vassal

A vassal usually refers to someone who has pledged loyalty to a Lord or superior power and is given protection by said Lord or superior power while still enjoying relative self governance. The vassal may be called upon to perform duties of tasks for the Lord or superior power and must honor their pledge of loyalty. This power dynamic is similar to Master/slave, but with more autonomy for the submissive.
