Sensei
Sensei usually refers to someone who takes on a wise, authoritative teacher role offering guidance and discipline.
The title is particularly common in Japanese rope bondage (shibari and kinbaku), where it is used to respectfully address skilled practitioners and teachers.
Sensei can also be used as a title within a Dominance and submission (D/s) relationship, particularly one involving instruction, training, or mentorship. In these dynamics, a Sensei may take on an authoritative role, guiding a partner's development, teaching skills, or establishing rules and expectations.
Origins of the Term Sensei
The term sensei comes from the Japanese 先生 (sensei), literally meaning "one born before." It is a respectful form of address for teachers and other recognized professionals or experts.
Its use in Japanese rope bondage reflects the tradition of learning techniques and styles from experienced practitioners.
The title also appears in more explicitly sexual or power-exchange relationships, where it emphasizes teaching, discipline, guidance, or authority. A BDSM blog post from 2013 discusses sensei as a possible title for someone who teaches kink-related skills, separately from titles used for a Dominant.
