Otherpaw
Otherpaw is a term used to describe people who enjoy roleplaying as animals or taking part in animal-related activities as a hobby. This may include quadrobics (moving on all fours), making or wearing animal masks, ears and tails, making animal sounds, or otherwise acting like a particular animal.
Otherpaw can overlap with kink, particularly pet play, puppy play, kitten play, pony play, and other forms of animal roleplay. But while the outward activities may look very similar, otherpaw is not inherently sexual or kinky.
Otherpaws do not need to identify as non-human. Instead, they choose to take on an animal role for fun, creativity, self-expression, or simply because they enjoy the activities associated with it. The animal an otherpaw chooses to roleplay is sometimes called their "pawtype."
Origins of the Term Otherpaw
Otherpaw appears to be a relatively new term that emerged online around 2024, alongside therian, furry, quadrobics, and animal-roleplay communities. It is believed to have been coined by a YouTuber called Nixyz_BTS. But much of her original content is no longer available, making the term’s exact date and circumstances of coinage difficult to verify.

How does otherpaw differ from pet play?
Otherpaw is voluntary animal roleplay or animal-like activity done as a hobby or form of self-expression. Pet play, by contrast, is animal roleplay within a kink or BDSM context. It may involve D/s dynamics, Handlers, rules, collars, training, or sexual activity.
Like otherpaw, pet play does not have to be sexual. The key difference is that pet play is generally understood through a kink or BDSM lens, while otherpaw does not inherently have any connection to kink.
Someone can therefore be both an otherpaw and into pet play. However, identifying as an otherpaw on its own does not imply anything about a person’s sexuality, fetishes, or D/s relationships.
How does otherpaw differ from Therians?
A therian experiences an internal identification with a non-human animal, while an otherpaw chooses to roleplay as one. But the two aren't mutually exclusive. Someone can be both a therian and an otherpaw if they identify as an animal and also enjoy voluntary animal roleplay as a hobby.
How does otherpaw differ from being a furry?
Some people see otherpaw as a subculture or branch within the furry fandom. But while furry fandom generally centers on an interest in anthropomorphic animal characters, otherpaw more specifically involves roleplaying or behaving like an animal. A person can be both, but does not have to identify as furry to be an otherpaw.
