Versatile Switch
A versatile switch is someone who identifies as both versatile and a switch. This means they enjoy or are comfortable taking both Top and bottom roles in BDSM play, as well as both Dominant and submissive roles in relationships, scenes, or activities.
As a versatile person, they can enjoy being a Top (giving) or bottom (receiving). As a switch, they can take either a Dominant or submissive role, depending on their mood, partner, type of play, or personal preferences.
A versatile switch may enjoy all four combinations of these roles, although they don't necessarily have an equal preference for each.
A versatile switch might:
- Be a Dominant bottom with one partner and a submissive top with another.
- Alternate between Topping and bottoming, or Dominance and submission, within the same relationship or scene.
- Usually take one or two preferred roles but occasionally enjoy exploring others.
- Prefer Topping for certain activities and bottoming for others, while enjoying both Dominant and submissive roles.
- Be submissive in long-term relationships but enjoy being Dominant during casual or pick-up play, or vice versa.
The term emphasizes that Topping and bottoming are separate from Dominance and submission. Someone can be a Dominant without topping or a submissive without bottoming, and identifying as a versatile switch means being open to both sides of these different aspects of BDSM.
Origins of the Term Versatile-Switch
The term versatile is most closely associated with LGBTQ+ communities, particularly gay and bisexual men, where it describes someone who enjoys both insertive (Top) and receptive (bottom) roles during sex.
Its use in BDSM is sometimes debated because Topping and bottoming don't necessarily involve penetration. As a result, some people consider switch the more appropriate term for someone who enjoys both roles. However, others distinguish between the two, using versatile to describe their preference for giving and receiving BDSM activities and switch to describe their preference for both Dominance and submission.
The term versatile switch combines these identities, allowing someone to express flexibility in both their physical role during play and their preferred power exchange dynamics.
Versatile Switch Statistics
Although there's limited research specifically on versatile switches, studies suggest that flexibility between BDSM roles is relatively common.
- 34.6% of respondents in a 2014 study of BDSM participants either identified as versatile or switch, or selected both Dominant and submissive role identifiers.
- 6.7% of the full sample in the same study fell into a category the researcher called versatile-switch, which included people identifying as versatile and/or switch without selecting other Dominant or submissive role identifiers.
- 35.6% of participants in a 2026 international study of 1,104 BDSM practitioners identified as switches.
- 7.1% of participants in the 2026 study identified with both Dominant-type and submissive-type roles without identifying as switches.
The study did not establish how many participants specifically identified as both Versatile and Switch. Because participants could select multiple roles, the percentages also overlap.
