An emotional sadist is someone who engages in sadism with a primary preference for psychological/emotional pain over physical pain.

This generally means someone whose erotic landscape is built around humiliating, degrading, and inspiring shame in someone else.

An emotional sadist is the counterpart to an emotional masochist.
