Muva
A Muva is a House Mother in LGBTQ+ ballroom culture, a Black and Latino queer subculture built around competitive balls, performance, fashion, voguing, and chosen-family “Houses.”
A Muva acts as a maternal or matriarchal figure within their House. They may mentor and guide house members, help them prepare for balls, offer emotional or practical support, and provide a sense of chosen family and community.
Although Muva is not originally a BDSM or kink role, the term may sometimes appear in kink or fetish spaces where queer, ballroom, leather, and BDSM communities overlap. In those contexts, it can be used to describe someone who takes on a nurturing, authoritative, protective, or maternal dynamic. However, this usage is secondary and should not be confused with the original ballroom meaning. Likewise, Muva is not interchangeable with BDSM roles such as Mommy, Mommy Domme, or Domme, which have distinct meanings and dynamics.
