Pet Trainer
Pet Trainer is a kink role that usually refers to someone who enjoys teaching, training, and shaping their pet as part of pet play.
Pet Trainers teach and guide their pet, but the role tends to be more structured than that of a Handler. A Pet Trainer may:
- Teach commands and cues, such as sit, stay, come, down, heel, fetch, drop, speak, roll over, or play dead. These may be verbal commands, hand signals, sounds, or other agreed cues.
- Teach tricks or behaviors, including fetching objects, walking on a leash, holding positions, performing routines, completing chores, or interacting appropriately with other pets.
- Use rewards to encourage behavior, such as praise, treats, petting, scratches, belly rubs, toys, affection, or playtime. Psychological rewards like clicker training may also be used.
- Provide agreed correction, which might be as simple as repeating a command, saying “no,” withholding a reward, or redirecting the pet.
- Help the pet enter a pet headspace. For example, putting on a collar might signal the beginning of pet time.
- Lead pet-play activities, such as walks, fetch, tug-of-war, feeding from a bowl, grooming, obstacle courses, or playful social interaction.
- Look after the pet during play, including checking their comfort, helping with gear, offering water and breaks, watching for overstimulation, protecting boundaries in social spaces, and providing aftercare. This part overlaps strongly with the Handler role.
