Aftercare Specialist
An aftercare specialist is a person whose role in a scene, event, or dynamic is focused on helping participants recover after intense kink or BDSM play.
Unlike a Dominant, submissive, or other active play partner, an aftercare specialist may not be directly involved in the scene itself. Instead, they help monitor and support the people involved once the scene ends. They may help with dom or sub drop, physical discomfort, dehydration, or injury. They may also provide emotional support.
An aftercare specialist's support may include offering blankets, water, snacks, reassurance, grounding, gentle conversation, emotional check-ins, or help transitioning back to a calmer headspace. In larger events or more intense scenes, an aftercare specialist can help make sure participants are not left alone to process the physical and emotional effects of play.
Origins of the Term
The term aftercare specialist is sometimes used in the medical world to refer to someone who helps care for people after surgery or other medical procedures. It was first used on FetLife to refer to someone who provides care after a scene around 2013.
