Kink Sherpa
Kink sherpa is usually someone who helps another person explore kink, BDSM, or the kink community by offering guidance, advice, introductions, and support. Similar to a mentor or tour guide, a kink sherpa is typically someone with more experience who helps newcomers find their footing, learn about different practices, and connect with other people in the community.
A kink sherpa might introduce someone to their first munch or play party, explain community etiquette, recommend educational resources, or offer advice about consent, boundaries, and safety. They may also provide emotional support and encouragement as someone explores their interests and discovers where they fit within the community.
The term is usually informal and sometimes humorous. Unlike a formal BDSM mentor or teacher, a kink sherpa doesn't necessarily provide structured instruction or have expertise in a particular activity. Their role is more about helping someone navigate an unfamiliar world.
However, kink sherpa can also have a negative connotation, particularly when someone expects an experienced kinkster to provide free education, guidance, or emotional support. This is especially true when it is done without asking whether they're willing to take on that responsibility.
In some contexts, the term is also used to criticize people who impose their fantasies or fetishes on others without consent, effectively making those people unwilling sherpas for their sexual desires or interests.
Being someone's kink sherpa should always be voluntary. Experienced kinksters aren't obligated to educate newcomers. And just because someone offers guidance doesn't mean they're interested in a sexual or BDSM relationship with the person they're helping.
