Slut

A slut is usually a person who embraces the freedom to engage in sexual, kinky, or power exchange acts in accordance with their desires, often with multiple partners, regardless of conventional values.

The word "slut" may be considered a slur, but it is often reclaimed as a chosen identity. However, because the word is still widely used as an insult, it should not be applied to someone unless they use or consent to that label.

This term is often used as a synonym for "whore."

Origins of the Term

The word slut dates back to Middle English, where it originally referred to a dirty, untidy, careless, or slovenly woman. Its exact origin is uncertain, though it may be related to older Germanic words for sloppiness, idleness, or untidiness.

The sexual meaning of slut appeared quite early too. By the mid-1400s it was already being used to suggest sexual looseness or lasciviousness. For centuries, the domestic and sexual meanings overlapped. A “slut” could mean a woman seen as dirty, careless, improper, sexually loose, or some combination of those judgments. Over time, the sexual insult became the dominant modern meaning.

There is no single date when “slut” was reclaimed. The reclamation seems to have happened in waves. Feminist, queer, punk, sex-positive, kink, and non-monogamy communities were already playing with the word by the 1990s. The popular book "The Ethical Slut" helped popularize a more deliberate sex-positive use in 1997.

The word became much more publicly contested in 2011 with the rise of SlutWalk, a protest movement against victim-blaming and slut-shaming. Today, “slut” remains both a harmful insult and a reclaimed identity, depending on who uses it, how, and whether the person being described consents to the label.

Slut Role Variations
