Butch Bait
Butch bait is a queer slang term that refers to someone, usually a femme lesbian or sapphic-identifying individual, who intentionally presents or styles themselves to attract the attention of butches or masc-of-center individuals. It acts as a playful green light or signal to let butches know that their romantic or sexual interest is welcome.
The term is often used as a form of queer flagging, particularly by femmes who may not be immediately recognizable as queer. Wearing a "butch bait" shirt, patch, pin, or other accessory can communicate both their attraction to butches and their openness to flirting or being approached.
For some, butch bait is also about celebrating butch identity and challenging the idea that butches are undesirable or predatory for expressing attraction. It can reassure butches who are hesitant to approach femmes that their attention is wanted and appreciated.
Although the term is usually playful, flirtatious, and sometimes sexually suggestive, not everyone appreciates it. Some butches feel that the word "bait" implies they are sexually aggressive or expected to initiate romantic encounters. Others see it as an affirming expression of desire and appreciation.
The term appears in queer media, fashion, zines, and online communities.
Origins of the Term Butch Bait
The exact origins of butch bait are unclear, but the expression draws on the longstanding tradition of butch-femme culture and queer flagging, where clothing, accessories, and other signals communicate identity and attraction.
The phrase has become particularly visible in online lesbian and sapphic communities, appearing on T-shirts, patches, pins, and stickers. By 2023, it was already familiar enough to inspire discussions about queer visibility, butch desirability, and whether its playful use of the word "bait" could be interpreted as objectifying.
More recently, butch bait has also appeared in queer media and creative projects, including a 2026 anthology celebrating butch-for-butch desire.
