Master
In contemporary kink, there are two forms of the title Master:
- A person who consensually takes ownership over someone they are in a relationship with.
- A person who has been awarded the title by their Clan/Tribe/Community due to their commitment, service and knowledge of BDSM.
Master of a House
In core (or traditional) BDSM, Master is not a role, but a title for a specific form of Dominant and pertains to BDSM only. A Master accepts (or has accepted) absolute total authority and assumes ownership of a slave or slaves as part of their house.
A Master is someone who consensually "owns" a submissive as property - an indication that another human being found them trustworthy and experienced enough to transfer most if not their whole agency to them. This may even include the Master taking over control of their finances and assets.
It is important to note that transferring control of assets is incredibly risky and can lead to abuse and even scams. Be careful any time there is a transfer of control of assets that comes with a relationship. Someone demanding control of your assets is often a serious red flag! 🚩
Being a Master is not just a leadership role, but that of a manager, and it is expected that a Master possess a vast knowledge of not just BDSM and kink activities, but many related topics including:

This knowledge is obtained over years of learning through reading books, attending workshops, munches and play parties, as well as experience gained in relationships and via practicing kink.
It is considered a social faux-pas to bestow the title of Master upon oneself if not in a M/s relationship. For a beginner to bestow the title of Master upon themselves is a fast track to social ostracization as others in the community will see this as being a fake or imposter.
Master of BDSM
The title of Master may also be bestowed on someone as an acknowledgement of their competency by other experienced practitioners of core BDSM.
Earning the title often involves years of mentorship, teaching, or contributions to the BDSM community, as recognized by peers, as it takes years if not decades to reach the level of competence needed to earn the title of Master. Being given the title means they have experience, knowledge, and understanding of the lifestyle and of what these roles require. This includes demonstrating core values as well as being skilled at the things they use as toys. Often this title comes with responsibilities, such as handing down BDSM knowledge to newer practitioners.
When one is bestowed the title of Master by the community the person is frequently presented with a leathers Masters cap as is long standing tradition, and may also be presented with a certificate, whip and other gifts depending on the specific flavor of the community bestowing the honor.
The Master/Slave Dynamic
BDSM Master/slave dynamics are built on pre-negotiated consent that is given when the relationship is formed preceding "ownership" being taken of the slave by the Master, rather than having to consent to individual actions, the Master has established guidelines of what the slave has consented to, usually in the form of a non-legally binding written contract.
M/s Dynamic Types
An M/s Dynamic can come in many flavors. Four of the most common are:
Master & Sex Slave
In this dynamic, the limit of the sex slave's ownership only extends to kink activities and not to their vanilla life. The Master has consent to do any sexual acts that fall within the guidelines of their contract.
This dynamic focuses on consensual kink activities, primarily sexual, but may include other negotiated acts like service, bondage, or protocol within the contract’s guidelines.
Partial Power Exchange (PPE)/Limited Power Exchange (LPE)
An M/s (Master/slave) relationship that is not a total power exchange (TPE) is often referred to as a partial power exchange or limited power exchange. In this case, the Master has a great deal of control over the slave's life but the slave retains autonomy in certain areas.
(Some say that this relationship is more akin to a Dom/sub relationship just with M/s titles, however, most M/s relationships in practice land here)
Total Power Exchange (TPE)
When a Master takes ownership of and therefore control of a slaves life, this dynamic is recognized as a total power exchange, where consent is given standard through pre-negotiated guidelines usually in the form of a written non-legally binding contract. TPE usually also involves consensual non consent.
While consent is considered constant within the dynamic, at times it may be necessary to renegotiate the contract to accommodate changing circumstances.
If consent is revoked without renegotiation, the dynamic may be considered broken, similar to a significant breach in a committed relationship. Safe words or alternative signals (e.g., gestures, check-ins) are usually used as emergency stops, though some CNC-based TPE dynamics may rely on other pre-negotiated safety measures.
Total Life Control (TLC)
When TPE doesn't go far enough, you get total life control (TLC). This is an extreme form of power exchange relationship where the slave is micro managed by the Master, often controlling everything from what and when they eat, to when they are able to go to the bathroom, and whether they are allowed to speak. It can often even go as far as telling them when and where to be as well as how to position their bodies.
It is worth noting that TLC is not seen by most as possible in the long term, and is far less common than all other flavors of M/s relationships. Although it may be something that is negotiated when a M/s dynamic is created, it is usually something that is only engaged in with for short periods of time. It can be very beneficial for a slave who struggles with extreme anxiety as the loss of control can bring them relief from how they feel and may be coupled with other fetishes such as dollification
